Greater Victoria has the highest number of urban farms in Canada and is known for thriving local food production and bountiful markets. However, local food consumption has dropped dramatically over the years and farmland is now underutilized and valued in comparison to possible real estate development.

The price of land and the barriers new farmers face accessing land are the biggest threats to food security in the region. Less than 10% of all food consumed in the Greater Victoria region is grown locally. Any disruption to the mainstream food system could see serious consequences. Aging local farmers soon looking to sell their farms are faced with a serious quandary.... Who will buy and run the farm when retirement comes?

Greater Victoria and the Gulf Islands are scattered with examples of how local food economies can work. Can this enthusiasm for local food be used to harvest sustainable systems and resources to combat the impending farm succession crisis?

This event will bring together key players from the local farming community with the region’s brightest minds in the local food scene in an effort to identify solutions so local farms can survive the impending farm succession crisis. There will be a short guest speaker series followed by a facilitated discussion, and then a break out group session will focus on identifying solutions aimed at bringing together new farmers with farms to grow food on.
